Do it with Thy might

Be the first
In 2006 I began my studies at The Mico University College, a 172 year old cornerstone in education in the western hemisphere, being the oldest of its type; a campus laden with old Georgian type architecture, that has an atmosphere dictated by traditions dating back to decades before my entrance. Of the many things that was appealing to me, was the school’s motto, it is “Do it with thy Might”. Powerful words one might say, I agree. Yet it was not until July 2008 while scanning through my brother’s Hi5 profile that I realized that it is actually from the Bible. I therefore launched into the Scripture from which it was taken, upon reading it I realized, much to my delight, that the school song which is a six verse hymn was also based on that Scripture.
The Scripture I speak of is Ecclesiastes 9:10. This charge says “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, [c] where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom”. Having read it for myself, I hurriedly called a friend and proclaimed to to him that these words which were sometimes meaningless to me was actually from the Scriptures. Much to my surprise the friend exclaimed “duh”, This was like a sunrise of knowledge smiling down on me. Reading the scripture carefully and then further examining the other 17 verses in that chapter, I notice that it outlines many things:
1. There is no work, repentance, power when we die.
2. The dead have no knowledge of the world.
3. We are given knowledge and the awesome power of choice while we are alive.
4. We are only but stewards of our lives, like tenants and God is the landlord/owner.
These four points are all known to us, but have we really thought about or sought to make practical decisions based on them. This is knowledge and this is what Ecclesiastes speaks about. There are three things common to all men, that are we are born into this world, to live, and will all eventually die. The most powerful thing we have as human beings and children of God is the knowledge of salvation and the practicality of it. Whatever we do here on Earth, which is like a waiting area, determines the afterlife/ destination. This is reinforced by the words of verse 9 in thh chapter and moreover verse 10 which carries the motto “9 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun— all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, [c] where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. “. These two verses in many ways concretely supports my four points. It speaks to recognizing that as children of God, we are all given a mandate which requires us to engage in the work of God with might, meaning fervently and with potency and a steadfast spirit, recognizing that the will of God is perfect and without charting the way for a reward, knowing that the present determines the afterlife destination.
How can we as young be steadfast and do it (life) withmight as the scripture commands? Firstly, knowing our Father is slow to anger and merciful, we must recognize that the rewards are attained by the tasks we do in the present and most importantly how we do it, Christ in His ministry on Earth was thorough and was soberly alert to the needs of thosee he served and worked with. Though he cried to let the cup of suffering pass while he was on OUR cross, He went through to the end and did it with all His might. The writer of Ecclesiastes says there is judgment in the future.
Written by pastordimarioRejoice, young man, while you are young, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Follow the inclination of your heart and the desire of your eyes, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment (Ecclesiastes 11:9).
We are challenged that when doing the work of God, there should be no comprise, no space nor time used to include mediocre talents, interests, nor resources. He not only calls for the best but deserves it. Human beings were created to serve, the fact is that even though we don’t have a relationship with God where we are treated like slaves, we must acknowledge that we are SLAVES TO CHRIST, and His tasks for us is everything that we should do, and worshiping him through our daily tasks is to do them with our might. This is what the chapter speaks about. The task is our lives, the role is servants of God and the tasks we do must be done with our might through the strength provided by Almighty God.To the end of the chapter we are given almost like a presentation of our choices, its either live for Christ wholeheartedly and the condition by which we should do this is by doing all in His service with might, no mediocre offering of time, resources and our God-given talents and gifts. Or the other option, live a life of serving him on shifts, taking over God’s job as owner of our lives and forgetting that we are only landlords for a moment. Remember Earth is like a waiting area and only the best is good enough to ever move on. We are nothing but stewards of our bodies which belong to Him. The Scriptures tell us that our bodies are the temple of the Lord. Practical application of this scripture calls for much humility, killing earthly desires and submitting to the perfect will of God.
To that end Ecclesiastes sends us to go forth and embrace the challenge to live life doing things with our might which is through Christ Jesus. We have the guidelines of the many stories of the Bible, Paul declares that he was slave to Christ, Can we declare that? This unique chapter in many ways seems to be one of rebuke but also one of correction and direction and offers hope to the righteous. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep His commandments; for that is the whole duty of everyone (Ecclesiastes 12:13). Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might (Ecclesiastes 9:10)
