DJ NicholasBest Dressed and 50 Fest

71 Million Jamaican dollars (well that’s what i saw in one paper), over 40,000 people in western Jamaica, over 90,000 people in Kingston, weeks of promotion, immaculate organization, lots of support from local churches, lots of prayer and fasting, and a whole lot of other things have certainly made 50 Fest literally (I would say) one of the Best Dressed things to happen to Gospel in Jamaica.

50 Fest was wonderful and for those who missed it, you missed something amazing; the stunts, the food, the people (I saw people whom I hadn’t seen in ages), the action and not to mention the Music. Dj Nicholas‘ set was amazing, not to mention Israel (who had me singing “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.. at work”) and Papa San. I will not forget this one… “Ole time ppl use to say, wah sweet nanny goat ago run him belly. Simmer down, yu fi start read yu bible…”

Overall 50 Fest was the bomb. Jamaica definitely needed something like this. Not to mention the uninhibited flow of food and drinks backstage, the nice chandelier lights, the couches, plasma TV and all the fandangles, they certainly did a good job and I applaud the entire team.

Jamaican Women and people

So this week I found out a lot more about Jamaica and its impact on the world at large. Firstly I was watching Amazing Grace with some friends and every time they wanted to emphasize the impact of slavery on the Caribbean people, I think they just said Jamaica since that was the place that most people would be able to identify with.

Apart from that I noticed a few other things; One of Luis’ Palau sons got married to a Jamaican woman (Robert Levy’s daughter), Israel Haughton also told the 50 fest crowd that his father (I believe) was from Jamaica and Toby Mac did not hesitate to declare that Jamaican women (including his wife) are the BEST IN THE WORLD! So I’m thinking, with all these international people having such strong Jamaican roots, why are we the people here so blind to the impact that we have on the world? Why don’t we love our women, and why don’t our women and men believe more in themselves?

Men and their toys…

Apart from all that, I happened to go to New Kingston (or should say the Lord led me) and it was simply amazing to see the hundreds of people lined off to see the RED BULL formula one race car. There was not one single angle, where if you were late like me, you would be able to see the cars and bikes properly. People were just in the street unreserved-but within the law. It was a sight to behold.

As I said to a couple friends, I have not seen anything of late that has attracted so many men in one place, and so many Jamaican men (even willing to give up that so called personal space) to see these cars and bikes. Man, you should have been there-the stunts were wicked. But it occurred to me - my friend said there aren’t enough men in carnival (and there are lots of women there), and i know that there are not enough men in the church. Hence from deduction we can assume that women will not necessarily attract men.

What I concluded from this though (and dont get me wrong, because there were crazy ladies at the car show), men are willing to do things that they are interested in together. So let this be a lesson to us. If we can get things that men are interested in and allow them to do it together, I know the church will be better off for it. Men attract men, and men are interested in things that attract them, so we need to find that and exploit it!

    Hey there, few things.
    1. Cant say much bout 50Fest, neva mek it. [yup a missed it :(] however judging by the crowds it goes to show that Jamaicans crave opportunities for wholesome family entertainment/fellowship, that actually caters to the whole family. Hats off to BD for this initiative and for including the church.

    2. It’s just sad that some Jamaicans especially some women dont know the influence we have on the world. Its our choice whether it will be negative or positive.

    3. Interesting line of argument bout ‘men and their toy’. It makes sense too, the church has to respond to info like this (well the facts that will come from these observations as observations alone not always enough to act on) and use it to advance it’s God given mandate.

    Thanks for teasing the mind.
    Bless

They had altar calls after every session.YFC volunteers and counsellors from churches were busy with their materials. We were trained before and given suitable stuff to minister to ppl of different ages.I’m not quite sure what the adult counsellors got. As a child counsellor we got REALLY REALLY cute materials, all about the Gospel. There were beads, a cube, gloves, all sort of stuff which demonstrated the Gospel in colourful child like ways.WE also got books for them and cards for their information so that follow up calls could be made. Altar calls were made after every session: the extreme stunts, Veggie Tales, and during the grand concert. So it was good! Many adults and children alike gave their heart to God. I was also very pleased at thenumber of altar workkers…… there were so many, my… just glory to God.. really.
