The Church has always rejected the practice of abortion, which, by the way, isn’t an invention of recent history - the horrid practice has been around “fram di devl wos a bwai”). One of the earliest Christian documents called the “Teaching of the Twelve Apostles” aka “Didache,” dated by some to as early as AD 50 (the date range is from AD 50 to AD 150), reflects the early Church’s anti-abortion teaching. Didache 2:2 reads: “You shall not murder a child by abortion or commit infanticide.”

In chapter 19 of another early Christian writing, the Epistle of Barnabas, dated about AD 70 - 132, one finds the commands: ”Thou shalt not slay the child by procuring abortion; nor, again, shalt thou destroy it after it is born. Thou shalt not withdraw thy hand from thy son, or from thy daughter, but from their infancy thou shalt teach them the fear of the Lord.”

F.J. Ross provides a lot more info in his article “Abortion and the Early Christian Church” available online at http://www.godandscience.org/abortion/earlychristian.html#n22 Ross points out the Church gave three reasons why the church rejected abortion because: 1) it was considered to be murder, 2) it was thought of as being the same as infanticide, and 3) it was believed that “in the foetus all the possible offspring the future adult could have produced.”

For now, I can think of another reason why I would stand behind the early church in rejecting the practice: in killing a child one kills the possibility of that child ever coming to experience the great height, the profound depth, and the immense breadth of God’s redeeming love toward us in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Pro-life friends, let us not only strive to prove that killing an unborn human is dreadfully wrong and displeasing to our God; let’s commend the beauty, the goodness, worth, and admirability of protecting the life of one created in the image of our God.

Correction to 3rd paragraph. “Ross points out that the Church gave three reasons why it rejeted abortion. The church rejected abortion because:…”
