What’s Your Primary Aim In Life?

By bertramgayle | Be the first

Almost a year ago, I took up John Piper’s “Don’t Waste Your Life.” I never found the time to go beyond the preface; I’ve found the time now! I’m finding the book very challenging. It is also reinforcing my desire to give up all the hopes and dreams of having a prosperous life in this world for the sake of the knowing Jesus and making Him known. Perhaps some of you are in a similar situation - you are coming from very “humble beginnings” and now it’s like “I’m a celebrity get me out of here!” (don’t know if you’ve heard of this UK reality TV show)…anyway, your sole aim is to get out of poverty ASAP; consequently, you try your best to acquire everything which makes for a good/comfortable life – a gr8 profession, a big bank account, a fantastic vehicle, a house in the hills, etc…

Sadly, for not a few of us that’s where our treasure is, so, God (and others, I guess) is only embraced/sought/desired to the extent that He aids us to find our earthly/corruptible/”perishable/stealable/transient treasure of an ideal life on earth… When God doesn’t help us in this regard we give up going to church, praying etc, (or we pray more, go to church more, etc…not to be satisfied in God, but to get something from His “pork barrel”).
Well, dear friends, I do pray God would help us not to “waste” our lives building for ourselves little comfortable kingdoms here on earth – little kingdoms that are easily destroyed with hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc…kingdoms which can be robbed, ravished, and thrown into utter confusion by humans. May we treasure God above all things in heaven and on earth and find in Him the deep perpetual joy/satisfaction/happiness/pleasure which we so desire…may this joy cause us to herald to the nations “I experience absolute joy in God’s presence; He always give me sheer delight…come taste and see that Yahweh is good.”

A FREE copy of Piper’s book is available online @ http://www.desiringgod.org/media/pdf/books_dwyl/dwyl_full.pdf

You can listen to an Audio on the same topic @ http://www.desiringgod.org/DWYL/

P.S. I’m not against progressing in life; my point is that it should be kept in perspective of a bigger issue – knowing and delighting in/enjoying God and making Him known. After all, we delight in what we value the most.
