YOW 4 Launch, Police and Jesus Party Cake
It was a very ‘different’ night for the organizers and supporters the Jesus Party on Friday September 29 at Scotia Link to celebrate the Events 2nd anniversary and to launch YOW 4.
The well publicized and highly anticipated Jesus Party was positioned to be the biggest ever, it was slightly dampened however, as a result of police orders to cancel the show.
Apparently, approval from the police to host the event was denied, and up to the time of the event, though it had been assured. When the crew reached the reached the venue at 4:00 pm, to setup the system they were met by the police officers who warned to not to set up because the event was not approved. The police eventually agreed to allow two small speakers, but all the heavy, large speaker boxes had to be removed from the venue.
Jesus Party organizer Danny Brownie, told FiwiVoice.com that the organizers tried to follow due process of law in applying to the police, though they may have been late in applying, and he wondered how the incident reached the “magnitude” it did, in such a short period.
The incident, though it apparently left a bitter taste in the mouth of some Gospel artistes, it didn’t prevent them from making a great representation through the opportunity they had. They proceeded to wish the Jesus Party a Happy Birthday, cut its cake and circulate it for all in the crowd to partake.
The highlight of the night was the launch of YOW 4, with the artistes who sing on the album sampling their songs and briefly sharing their inspiration for doing it. The album includes 19 hardcore Gospel-Dancehall songs from Dj Nicholas, Prophesy, Goddy Goddy, Jason Mighty, Omari, Prodigal Son, Mr. Gallimore, Shepherd, Ian Spencer, and Trinidadian Sherwin Gardener.
The crowd seemed receptive of the wide selection of songs, though some ‘dubplates’ cause much division in the crowd. Prodigal Son’s Bongo Town, which addresses the position of the Christian church in regards to the Rastafarian agenda, was an immediate hit with the crowd.
Jesus Party offers young Jamaicans an alternative to secular entertaiment options, which often present social problems such as youth involvement in alcohol, drugs, sex and the internalization of lewd musical content.
The next Jesus Party will be on November 24th,“back in it’s usual format, and at Swallowfield Chapel, in the car park Brownie assures.
