KD: Gospel…… let me speak to reggae Gospel first. We are known as the reggae nation of the world, when people hear Jamaica they hear reggae, right and what I’ve recognized Christ said it in the Bible, not in my own words but when you’re form a country you are less recognized by people in that country than foreigners. When you go to Canada or the United States people respects you more and I say that because we the reggae people kinda push away he reggae Gospel than people outside, and I don’t understand that. Reggae is our roots and I believe that we should implement reggae into our Gospel creatively; not go too far though but creatively which is what God has been teaching me to do and do it well.

FV: What about secular stations, you think they should play Gospel reggae?

KD: My God man! They are playing Gospel reggae, yeah man. I ‘ve heard BIG A and those big Djs playing them like crazy!

FV: Are they playing it on a satisfactory level?

KD: Right now I would think so. The other day I was in a taxi driving and I heard BIG A playing a song from Chevelle Franklin and about ten times he pulled op the song and he played that song in between a song from Beenie Man and a song from Lady Saw. Mi serious man.

FV: And as it relates to Christianity and youths in Jamaica…

KD: I think that young people have finally seen the light they are finally recognizing that they can make a change that they are purposeful, because one time young people in church were just young people in church. They were just there existing but not doing something purposeful and I believe that a change is actually happening were young people are recognizing that “I have a purpose and I can change.”

Even if it is one person they are recognizing that I have specific purpose and watch this I have realized that we young ministers of the Gospel whether it’s Kevin Downsell, Dj Nicholas or Jason Mighty I’ve realized that we have a big influence on the young Christian population.

I was saying to Jermaine (Edwards) the other day that if we have this influence we should use it properly and not take advantage of it because whenever we go before young people to minister to them they seem as if they can’t take there eyes of us. Why? Because we look like them; were not fifty or forty and most of us as young minister here now are around twenty.

FV: How old are you?

KD: I’m 24. So we look like them, we’re closer to them so they are easy to identify with us. So when I tell them that as a young man I’m facing sexual temptation but there is a way to over come it they will stop and say: “Yuh serious? Because mi ago tru the same thing too, so mek mi see what ‘im a say”. Then you can get the message across and you say I know pleasing God is rough but the other day I was tempted sexually and guess what I did I fought it and I went on my knees and plead the blood and rebuke the devil and when the young ministers say that on stage guess what? They go home and when they are tempted they remember what we said on stage and begin to implement it and they will realize that it begins to work. When we look at them and say it is possible to live for Christ these days it reaches somewhere deep it reaches the core of their soul and so I’m thanking God for that privilege.

FV: What drives you?

KD: What really drives me now is the need for change because everywhere we go there is something that needs to be changed and because whenever I enter a place and I see something that needs to be changed I’m always zealous to change it and that’s what drives me. I’m always doing something, somewhere with someone but one of the main things that really drives me is the presence of God which I’m always trying to maintain over me; my mind; keep a mind set so that the presence of God doesn’t leave me, keep a certain attitude, my conversations, jokes. So because I’ve always been trying to keep the presence of God around me His presence comes inside me and saturates my mind and keeps my mind going like that; so it keeps me energized to do something. I’m happy, I’m blessed! I’m blessed to be like this even tough I may not have a big house on the or a zillion jaguars but I’m blessed to know that young people look up to me and say “Speak something into my life because I know you’re going to change me”- it is a wonderful thing. Oh my God!

FV: A message to young people to young Christians; what do you have to say to young people?

KD: My message is really that I was born in Sa-vana-la-mar; I was raised on Maxfield Avenue, Waterhouse and Central Village. I’ve been at the worst but here is God taking the worst and exalting it, taking the humble and exalting it. My message is my life, you can never be too low for God, you can be never too low for God! You can never be too poor for God and you can never do too much that God can stop loving you. His love is unsearchable and you can never be too unintelligent that you cannot have a purpose. People may say because you didn’t go to University or a certain high school you don’t have a purpose. That’s a lie because there is a purpose in everybody. No one has a purpose to smoke weed or “buss gun” but a God given purpose and you need to find that and use it because I’ve been there-

FV: Tell us the motto you live by.

KD: My motto is always that I will never change St John 3 verse 30 that Christ may increase and I decrease all the time.

HEEY Kevin! It is so inspiring to see a true man of God ministering in this capacity.I hear what many people say about Gospel reggae, but to tell you the truth I watch some of these guys and their lifestyle on stage is not aligned to how they live-you know they dont practice what they preach(LITERALLY!).So for a while I really wanted to just move aside from it,because I thought these guys were just calling Jesus’ name in the midst of their own hype. But Kevin truly you are a man of God,we all have our flaws but seriously i really respect you.I met you about two years ago under very ’spiritual circumstances’ remember (lol).Anyway, you are in the prayers of many and you are definitely in mine because my yute Satan really nuh lyk yuh.I pray the hand of God will forever be upon you, never letting you go,and that goodness and mercy shall be your forever friends along with wisdom and understanding.
    Blessings Kevin
