Jason Mighty
Jason Mighty is a wonderful singing sensation. With his unique sing jay and DJ vibe Jason has carved out a niche for himself in the fast rising and increasingly popular Gospel-reggae market. Here Jason shares with FiwiVoice about growing up, how he got started in the Music business, his personal life, and his plans for the future.
Background
Jason confesses that he only attended primary and all-age schools and grew up in a poor background. He mentions that his mother did not have it financially to help him further his education and she struggled to send him to primary and all-age, so he didn’t make it to high school. Although he notes that he wasn’t that bright either, whether or not he wanted to attend high school he couldn’t. Now at 25 years old Jason says he knows that education is the key and plans to continue his studies.
How he got started
Jason started in the Music business through Bless, popularly know as ‘Prodigal Son’. Jason says, “He (Bless) really recognized the talent of singing”. I used to DJ in the world before, not buss, but I used to do my little thing. Hang out at Price Right, me and my friends dem, and we a bun we weed and Write lyrics, and I used to DJ.
But when I got saved I just put down the DJ thing to come serve God, cause I never believed in nothing named DJing. In fact I never believe in DJing in the church. I was serving God and in the midst of that there was a group called M.I.C. and at the time Prodigy was in that group. Because Prodigy got saved about a year before me, and that time Prodigy was in that group and about 4 other guys. I saw them DJing but dem neva know seh mi have the talent an mi coulda do likkle DJ to.
I can remember one day I went home, and mi Write a DJ vibe and a singjay vibe, and mi come an mek dem hear it and dem seh ‘yow you bad yute and yu tough and ting’ and from there me and Prodigy link up. Cause Prodigy was going through a conflict with his group because different personalities can clash, so he was going on his own, and I was doing my little sing jay and DJing; and them him a Goddy Goddy brother and me a Prodigal brother so there is a tie come together there.
So we start go together and we start go pon the road and go likkle church church, him a bring mi inna it, cause me neva know nutt’n bout it.
So one day I can remember I was telling Prodigal that I can DJ, but him neva hear mi still, but I remember one day Dunrobin High School had something and they asked Ryan to come and Ryan brought me with him. So i told Calvin (Prodigal Son/Bless) that I was going, and they called up Jason (those times I was going by the name Jason) and Prodigal and his band was there. And the band go and set up fi mi and mi go up and DJ a vibe and sing jay a likkle vibe. So when I came off the stage and went to prodigal and seh yow brethren how mi sound? And de brethren look pon me and she,“u caan dj? It nuh hard enuh!” So mi say “how you mean seh mi caan dj?”And him seh “no man, u can’t DJ. A sing u fi sing.”
Turning Point
And mi seh boy, is like the man shoot down mi vision. But me look at it and seh prodigal son seh mi caan DJ, mi nuh look at it as an embarrassment; mi look at it as a stepping stone. Because he didn’t just stop there, he said to me “you know you can sing, you sing better than how you DJ, why don’t you try singing?”
it continues…
Yeah? Mi sound like mi can sing to you?
Him seh “yeah yu can sing”
so mi seh “alright then”then he said “alright, you know wah, come a studio Monday.”
“Dem time deh Danny Brownie studio, Main St. was on Red Hills Road, an him seh mi fi come a studio. An mi go studio the following Monday an him mek Danny Brownie hear mi, Danny Brownie do an audition. An when mi go inna the place mi feel nervous cause Danny Brownie ago hear mi, me no know of me singing, me jus’ a follow wha him seh. Anyways mi go deh an do a ting, cause dem time deh I think he was working on Yow 3, dat was about 2002.
An him seh “sing a song mek mi hear” so me sing a song and then him seh “sing a next song” and I did. I sang about 4 songs for Danny. Them him look round and stop work and seh to me seh “yow brethren you bad enuh”.
Cause him never, there’s no other guy who ever sing like my type of style in Gospel. I’m the first type of person who sing a singjay vibe. So when Danny hear mi, him a seh “yow you tuff enuh brethren, yu bad, come een man” and those time they were writing for yow 3 so they started writing for me, and that’s how I really started.
Would you consider yourself a full-time singer now?
Yeah man, I’m a full time singer now. A four years mi a sing now.
Since 2002?
Yeah.
What was your first recorded song?
My first recorded song was ‘God alone we praise’ but no one heard it because at the time my voice wasn’t mature enough, and Yow 3 was on a pause at the time and then in 2004 Danny really go ahead and start do some work on yow 3. So that’s when my voice was mature enough.

well I found this article to be very interesting, Jason’s Views are interesting and though I agree that inorder to save some people we have to reform our methods in bringing the Gospel across; however, I dont believe that we have to compromise too much. Someone has said and I agree, that God is a loving God, and he will give us all redemption and salvation if we repent and ask for his forgiveness, but he will not drag people kicking and screaming to be saved if they dont want to be saved. Therefore, I believe that Gospel needs to be reformed, but not to the point where Gospel “reggae” artistes should be borrowing beats from those of popular Reggae artistes they should come up with their own. Make this revolution tasteful, the world should emulate Christians, we should not compromise our standards to suite the world. Christ was a world changer, he blazed his own trail, he did not follow or copy the ways of the world to reach people he did so by being himself and so the world came unto him, because he was a revolutionary and not a conformist.
