Gallimore - Brokenness to Victory

9 responses

Kemar Gallimore started performing professionally in 1998, a year after he was converted at a bible study. Gallimore, was convicted after realizing it would be futile ‘to gain the whole world and lose his soul’, and so he accepted Christ in his life. Living in ‘Rema’, in Trench Town Gallimore was greatly influenced by the Rastafarian movement, made strong in his community through the influence of Bob Marley. Today, Galimore is a bonafide Gospel sensation. This is Kemar’s Story on Gospel reggae, homosexuality, the Music business, his career and his ministry.

With this continuing debate how do you feel about Gospel reggae? : I believe Gospel reggae is relevant at this time, cause we see where it even growing and the impact is getting stronger and stronger. Gospel reggae do have it’s place because we remember when we start out in the beginning, they weren’t receiving us like now. We see where the market grow.

You know about this whole charter of rights thing, where they are looking to amend the constitution, and there is this big flare up of homosexuality becoming almost legal, and you had a song that said “if mi talk ‘bout it is a problem”, how do you feel about the issue of homosexuality in Jamaica?
Well in Jamaica, you know Jamaicans, its culture and how we grow, we without even using the scripture, we totally against that. By just looking it, it just look abnormal-it is abnormal, it nuh look natural, it nuh look real, because we grow up see a man talking to a woman, and we grow up seeing men talking about “girl in a bundle”, so when we see a man with another man sometime me wonder if it real although me hear seh people really do them things deh, cause I never see it yet. Is like me still really think in mi self and seh hol’ on, da ting yah really, really real? Mi still nuh convinced seh it real.

And based on scriptures Romans 1 speak out strongly against all these things, and it go on and on, there are scriptures in the bible that speak out against it, because there are times when the — woulda seh a just pure funny man come a church, and if we as the Christians sit down and nuh make a stand and nuh pick up the cross and go out and step out and mek dem know where we stand, dem wi just believe seh a just pure funny man come church so we haffi mek dem know seh we are not for that.

I am not condemning a man wha a struggle with the act of homosexuality, I am talking about them men now who want to manipulate even the government and are saying we cant speak out freely, we cant express wi self freely-because I believe in freedom of expression. That’s how we grow, we a straight forward yute from the inner-city.Is not homosexuality alone mi lick out ‘gainst, mi seh, “nuh come a church if a man u come fi look”, mi sing songs weh people get delivered from them sickness. So, a one song mi sing ‘bout homosexuals.

Do you think in our response to the homosexuals, we have taken it too far? Because even with the whole song, “if mi talk bout it is a problem”, do you think if person in our church was facing the problem they would be comfortable enough to come to us as Christians?

No. not really I don’t believe that they would go to any and anybody but you know people still find people from time to time to trust, not just with homosexuality alone, even people struggling with fornication, people will find it a struggle because you know church love to gossip and like to tear down instead of trying to help you they use it against you. So is not just homosexuality alone, if somebody struggling with fornication they are going to be afraid to come out and say ‘me struggling with this’. The youths that are struggling with masturbation them ‘fraid, they deny it, they living in denial, homosexual even worse, because it suh abnormal. If a man struggling with fornication we nah go look pon it as dat bad, but a same sin, the whole a dem a same sin, that’s why we say we not condemning-I don’t agree with the approach that some of the secular artistes take, because if you listen in my song there is nowhere in the song where I tell a man fi guh shoot no gay, there is nowhere in the song that say bun gay or kill gay-

And you even say father God tell mi how to –
Yeah mi even ask God so. Is like trust me, that song is like against the man dem weh a try fi condemn even the act, even the person because mi lick out against that.

What do you think is your biggest hit so far?
The biggest hit song, really, is still “think seh mi sick”, but mi always tell mi self seh mi still nuh really buss yet, mi still see me self as a youth weh nuh buss yet, that’s me. Me still feel like me really need fi go out there more.So where you plan to go after this?
Right now I’m negotiating with a major label in the states, I wont say the name, cause my album dropping definitely before this summer, and when we coming we coming with a certain standard, because as mi say, I’ve waited patiently. It a go worth the wait so mi a beg mi fans out deh weh a wait fi the album fi just heng on same way, trus mi.

Do you have a title you want to tell FiwiVoice?
Uhm the title, I wouldn’t say the title now, but just remember the new single that’s coming out it’s called BROKENNESS TO VICTORY.

Yeah we say brokenness to victory cause a long time we a wait, a whole heap a tings God take we from, the real struggle, and we nuh give up. When Peter step out the minute he took his eye off Christ he sank, so this song is just encouraging us to just keep our eyes fixed on the Lord and don’t give up, don’t lose heart just continue to press, all when it look like seh boy you a press so long and nutt’n nah come nuh give up.

Who is your favourite Gospel Dj right now?
Well my favourite Gospel Dj right now, I would say uhm Dj Nicholas because is a yute weh mi see God have a work for, and mi see him cut out fi do a work, and even from before him album drop and all of dat, I am one of the artistes who always believe in that yute because me see something in that yute different from the rest of DJs them, and mi always tell him seh “yu time a go come yute, nuh worry”, and mi see it a happen. So he is really one of my favourite DJ.

FiwiVoice is wondering what is happening to Gallimore? Why is it taking so long for Gallimore to launch out (“to buss”)?
Alright, let me tell you something, you see I am a person where I don’t bow and I don’t stoop to certain things, so people nah go really love Gallimore, a nuh everybody a go just love me so easy and quick fi endorse me. I go through a lot of struggles; a lot of fight, even in the business itself and mi haffi press pass all of that. So it take a longer time, because as I said God called me to set a certain trend, I rather to be like a sacrifice as a youth that go out there and even talk, lick out fi the freedom, even if mi nuh get millions of dollars out of this, my purpose is not to come in this and make no money and have a album be a big Gospel artiste, my purpose is to come and preach the Gospel uncompromised, how God say it supposed to go out there, and just be real.
And there are so many hypocrites in the church, and dem can’t stomach that, dem can’t process these things, so it take a longer time for them to deal with me, dem don’t ready for me as yet, that’s the reason why… but we see where it’s growing now. So is not that me nuh ready or the album nuh ready, is more the market the ready to receive the type of ministry that I’m coming out with and the type of content that I’m coming out with in terms of my lyrics.

What would you want to tell young people, young Christians?
Well, young Christians, me jus’ a encourage them fi keep on keeping on, cause as the word of God say the race is not for the swift but for those who can endure it, and endurance is the key, cause you can start off all good and well, but how you finish is key. Mi just a encourage them fi press on and don’t give up, and make sure they will be able to endure it to the end.
